With all the confusion around bike specs, I figured I’d give a simple introduction to the three main numbers you’ll see when shopping for an electric bike.
Volts are the hit. Watts are the punch. Amp-hours are how long the party lasts.
⚡ Volts = The HIT
Think of volts as how “spicy” the bike can feel.
- Higher voltage usually means a snappier throttle response.
- More top-speed potential.
- Makes it easier to lift the front wheel (when everything else supports it).
48V = Starter pack
60V = Real fun
72V = Respect the rear brake.
💥 Watts = The PUNCH
Watts determine how much power the motor can deliver.
- Same voltage, more watts = much stronger acceleration.
- This is what gives the bike that hard pull when you twist the throttle.
- It’s the difference between “it lifts a little” and “it’s trying to loop me.”
🔋 Amp-Hours (Ah) = The JUICE
Amp-hours are basically your battery’s gas tank.
- More Ah does not make the bike faster.
- It simply lets you ride longer before needing a recharge.
Small Ah = Short sessions.
Big Ah = Ride all day.
Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion around bike specs.
Still can’t wheelie?
Just kidding… that’s for the next blog. 😎
